First Day of School 2013

I got up early this morning and made a special breakfast to commemorate our First Day for 2013.  We all like different things.

With our tummies full and happy, we were ready to start the day. We managed to get all the scheduled schoolwork done with a few minor bumps, but overall it was good!

For Science, Master 10 is doing Sonlight’s Science 6: Introduction to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The first twelve weeks of the curriculum is spent studying Evolution: The Grand Experiment.

Evolution: The Grand Experiment

When my older two did Science 6,  I required them to read the book and to answer the questions.  I think back then I was beginning to see the cracks in the YECism arguments.  Now, I can’t stand this book.  It is entirely YEC propaganda presented in a slick, impressive manner. I know there are people who have read it and it affirmed their faith in YECism, but for me, it helped me to see just how desperate the YECists are to prove their case.

I am replacing the above book with Dr Alice Roberts’ book Evolution: The Human Story instead.

Evolution: The Human Story

Mast 10 has said that he might like to read The Grand Experiment if only to exercise his critical thinking skills and maybe write a research report on his findings (this would fulfill his Research Report requirement).  While part of me is excited that he wants to take on something like this, another part of me doesn’t think that I could stomach it.  We shall see.

  1. Way back when I STARTED using Sonlight (2002?), Science 6 or 7 actually required reading books on both* sides of the evolution debate and writing a position paper as to which side the student supported. That went away within two years from then.

*They said ‘both’. I always think of there being at least 4 or 5 sides–YEC, OEC, ID, TE, and traditional science.

  2. I started Sonlight Pre-K with my oldest in 2001. We did Core/Science 6 in 2009. I don’t remember them having to write a ‘position paper’. I do remember some of the questions they had to answer in the Science Student Activity Sheets. Those questions were framed in such a way that YEC had to be ‘right’ and Evolution had to be ‘wrong’.

I feel that there is a spectrum and not just two sides. Unfortunately, the YEC camp paints this black-and-white picture and says any problems with Evolutionary theory automatically means that Creation must therefore be right.
