Background Information

The Jonathan Park CDs are produced by Vision Forum Ministries.  Through these CDs, VF hope to ‘provide children and adults with scientific evidence that is in harmony with the Word of God’.  [Which raises the questions, ‘What does “in harmony” mean?’ and ‘What do they do with scientific evidence that is not in harmony with the Word of God?’]

Tagline: This is our Father’s world, God created it; we can explore it, so live the adventure!

So, without much further ado, let’s take a look at episode 11: The Return to Hidden Cave, Part 1.

Topics in this episode:

Issues

Creation Museum to Build People’s Faith

The Story: The Park and Brenan families are excited about the Creation Museum.  It will build people’s faith and give them scientific evidence for Creation and that Evolution isn’t really scientific at all. (3:50-4:00)

The Facts: This is pure YEC propoganda.

I have no words.  The idea that evolution isn’t scientific at all boggles the mind.  (Later (15:30-16:30), Dr Park explains that microevolution has been observed.  He gets around this by calling microevolution ‘adaptation’ and/or ‘variation’.)

How Darwin Came up with Evolution

The Story: Dr Park explains that ideas about evolution had been around for thousands of years, but it was Darwin (1809-1882) who popularised it. Darwin started out with the intention of entering the ministry but on a voyage to South America on the Beagle, with Charles Lyell‘s book in hand, Darwin became excited and convinced that the geological formations he saw were formed over millions of years.

The men also talk about geological gradualism, the idea that what we see was formed gradually.  It assumes that things happened at a uniform rate and does not take into account catastrophes.  Lyell came up with this idea, Darwin latched on to it and today, many people believe in evolution.  (4:00-5:55)

The Facts: Yes, it is true that evolutionary ideas did not originate with Darwin.

Geologists today do not subscribe to Lyell uniformitarianism.

Darwin’s Finches and Evolution

The Story: Dr Park explains that while Darwin was on the Galápagos Islands, he noticed many different types of finches. Darwin thought about Lyell’s theory of geological gradualism and extended it to biological gradualism, the idea that living creatures can evolve over millions of years.

Dr Park says that geologists now believe that Lyell was wrong about the Santa Cruz river in South America being formed over millions of years.  He concludes, ‘If Darwin was wrong about the Santa Cruz valley, I believe he was wrong about the finches on the Galápagos Islands, too.’ (6:45-8:35)

The Facts: Yes, it is true that geologists today believe that the Santa Cruz valley was caused by a glacier.  Yes, it is true that scientists sometimes make wrong conclusions.

I am extremely troubled by Dr Park’s conclusion that if Darwin was wrong about the Santa Cruz valley, then he is wrong about his other conclusions as well.  This is a part-to-whole logical fallacy.  Just because Darwin was wrong in one area does not mean that he is necessarily wrong in other areas.  Each area needs to be examined individually.

Fossils as Proof for a Worldwide Flood

The Story: Dr Park believes that because the fossils at the Brenan Ranch were caused by a lot of water like at Ghost Ranch that it is excellent evidence for the Flood of the Bible. (14:35-14:53)

The Facts: Since Dr Park is wrong about evolution being a random process, I believe that he is wrong about a dinosaur graveyard being evidence for a worldwide flood.

Okay, more seriously.  How does Dr Park know that the dinosaur graveyard was a result of a worldwide flood and not a local one?

No Transitional Fossils

The Story: Dr Benson says that he has been thinking a lot about what Dr Park said in the African Safari episode about there not being any fossils that show evolution. (15:00)

The Facts: There ARE transitional fossils. Since Dr Park is wrong about there being no fossils that show evolution, I believe that he is wrong about evolution overall.

Microevolution vs. Macroevolution

The Story: Dr Benson claims that evolutionists have seen changes in animals.  Dr Park explains that there is a difference between microevolution (aka variation or adaptation) and macroevoltion (where one animal changes into another).  Microevolution is observed all the time, but macroevolution has never been observed. (15:30-16:30)

The Facts: Dr Park calls microevolution variation and/or adaptation.  He calls macroevolution simply evolution.  The fact is they are both evolution.

Microevolution is sometimes called evolution within species.  Macroevolution is evolution above the species level.

There is evidence for macroevolution.

Since Dr Park is wrong when he says there is no evidence for macroevolution (or ‘evolution’ as he calls it), I believe he is wrong in his other ideas about evolution.  Read the other reviews to see how evolution is misrepresented.

Mutations Cause ‘New’ Animals

The Story: Dr Park says that evolutionists believe that mistakes or mutations in genes can cause one animal to turn into another animal over millions of years.(16:30-16:40)

The Facts: Since Dr Park is wrong about so many other things, I believe that he is wrong about this, too.

The transitional fossils do show that one type of animal has turned into another.

Evolution and No Purpose in Life

The Story: Dr Park says that if you believe in evolution, that means there isn’t a God who cares for you and that all of us are here because of millions of years of accidental mistakes; we have no purpose for being here. (21:27-21:36)

The Facts: Evolution is the study of changes in life.  It does not concern itself with the origins of life.  It does not require a belief in a God, nor an unbelief in God.

Evolution is not a chance process.

Even atheists can have purpose in life.  Such a statement is arrogant and rude.

Since Dr Park is wrong about what evolution is, I believe he is wrong about Creation as well.  There are other types of Creationism.  Why does Dr Park think that his is the right one?

Conclusion:

Since the YEC characters twist things to suit their definition in order to maintain their stand that evolution has never been observed, and therefore has never occurred, I believe that … oh, never mind.

The adventure aspect may be worthwhile if you like listening to little children getting kidnapped. It may distress younger listeners.  Parental discretion advised.
