Background Information

The Jonathan Park CDs are produced by Vision Forum Ministries.  Through these CDs, VF hope to ‘provide children and adults with scientific evidence that is in harmony with the Word of God’.  [Which raises the questions, ‘What does “in harmony” mean?’ and ‘What do they do with scientific evidence that is not in harmony with the Word of God?’]

Tagline: This is our Father’s world, God created it; we can explore it, so live the adventure!

So, without much further ado, let’s take a look at episode 12: The Return to Hidden Cave, Part 2.

Topics in this episode:

Issues

Adaptation/Variation vs. Evolution

The Story: Jessie and Jonathan want to know more about adaptation and variation versus evolution. (2:00-2:09)

The Facts: Jessie and Jonathan (and Dr Park who taught them) are implying that adaptation and variation are different from evolution.

Adaptation and variation are both evolutionary processes.

Tassel-Earred Squirrels

Tassel-eared Squirrel

The Story: Dr Park says that a perfect example of adaptation is the tassel-earred squirrels that live on the south of the Grand Canyon and the Kaibab squirrels that live on the north side of the Grand Canyon. The squirrels look the same except for the difference in the colour of their coats and tails.  These two squirrels never mixed.  They have been separated since the Grand Canyon was formed. They are developing differently.  Dr Park (and the kids) conclude that the changes are adaptation, not evolution. (2:10-3:30)

The Facts: Adaptation is an evolutionary process.  So, when scientists say that the squirrels are evolving differently, they are not wrong.

Newspapers Articles That Use the Word ‘Evolution’

The Story: Dr Park says that whenever newspapers claim that there is proof for evolution, they are really talking about adaptation and/or variation.  (3:30-3:46)

The Facts: It’s all evolution! Adaptation and variation are evolutionary processes.  To say otherwise is a lie.

Cave Fish

The Story: Dr Park, Dr Benson, Jonathan and Katie are exploring the cave

Cave Fish

There is a brief talk about cave fish that have no eyes.  Dr Park calls it Astyanax mexicanus. (7:10-7:36)

The Facts: Yes, there is such a thing as a blind cave fish. Wikipedia calls it something else: amblyopsidae.

Mutations Cannot Add New Information

The Story: There is another type of fish similar to the cavefish that does have eyes.  These two fish were probably exactly the same at one point in time.  Evolutionary change is not really happening, although genetic changes do happen sometimes.

‘Random accidental changes in an animal’s genes cannot produce unique information that will make useful body parts.’ (8:55-9:05)

‘Just think about how much new information it would take to turn a single cell into a human that has over thirty trillion cells.  That’s a huge amount of new information.  (9:10-9:18)

The Facts:

Mutations can add information.

Conclusions

The main focus was about forgiveness and salvation through Jesus and how important it is to spread the (Young Earth) Creation message so that others can believe Him, too.

The science portion of this program was severely lacking.  About half a minute was spent on talking about the blind cave fish.  I don’t know when this knowledge will come in handy, but, you never know.  The rest of the program was giving misleading information about evolution.
