Background Information

The Jonathan Park CDs are produced by Vision Forum Ministries.  Through these CDs, VF hope to ‘provide children and adults with scientific evidence that is in harmony with the Word of God’.  [Which raises the questions, ‘What does “in harmony” mean?’ and ‘What do they do with scientific evidence that is not in harmony with the Word of God?’]

Tagline: This is our Father’s world, God created it; we can explore it, so live the adventure!

NOTE: The producers of this series neglect to reference their information in any form.  No references is ever given either on the CD or in the Study Guide for ANY information presented in the series.  Even the voice actors of the series are not given any credit anywhere.  We only know that the series is a production of Vision Forum Ministries.

Topics in this episode

Evidence for a Worldwide Flood

Dr Park claims that there is ‘overwhelming’ evidence for a worldwide flood.  During the Flood, there would have have been earthquakes, tidal waves and volcanoes that would have reshaped the world.  It would have left evidence everywhere, and it has.

There are massive amounts of sediment around the world.  These show great evidence of being catastrophically deposited by water and powerful storms. In some cases, the forces moved the sediment long distances.  In the US these sediments cover several states.  We see the same evidence all around the globe. (5:00-5:50)

‘There is so much evidence that teams of Creation Scientists haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.’ (6:07-6:12)

Peruvian Andes

The STORY: In the Peruvian Andes, the sediments are folded and bent. ‘What kinds of catastrophic forces could accomplish this?’ (5:50-6:07)

The FACTS: Merely mentioning and claiming something as evidence for a worldwide Flood does not make it so.  This is propaganda.

Ayers Rock

Ayer's Rock/Uluru

Ayers Rock/Uluru

The STORY: Ayers Rock in Australia is made from sandstone deposited by water.  It measures five-and-a-half miles around and almost four miles from its base to its top. ‘Can you imagine the force of the waters that moved enough sandstone to form a five-and-a-half by four mile rock formation?’ (6:12-6:37)

The FACTS:  Ayer’s Rock, aka Uluru stands 348 m (1,142 ft) high (863 m/2,831 ft above sea level) with most of its bulk below the ground, and measures 9.4 km (5.8 mi) in circumference.  Not even half a mile from its base to the top.

This is such a glaring mistake.  It is mentioned in the program as well as in the Study Guide: jp_vol3_study_guide_epi27-28

Dinosaur National Monument

The STORY: Dinosaur National Monument is also evidence for  a worldwide flood.  There we

Dinosaur National Monument

Dinosaur National Monument

find dinosaurs, clams, snails, logs, and wood pieces buried together by volcanic and flood activity.  There are hundreds of sites like this all over the world that tell similar stories. (6:37-7:09)

The FACTS: Dinosaur National Monument was mentioned in Ep. 1: The Secret of the Hidden Cave, Part 1.

I don’t really understand how it is evidence for a worldwide flood.  Local flood, yes.  Worldwide flood?  No.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon

The STORY: The classic example for evidence for a worldwide flood is Grand Canyon.  The Redwall Limestone layer of the Grand Canyon seems to have been laid down incredibly fast, not to mention the many other layers show evidence of turbidity currents and powerful cross-bedding.  This all pretty much shows that these layers were formed rapidly by large forces of water. The evidence seems ‘overwhelming’. (7:09-7:37)

The FACTS: The statement that Grand Canyon was carved out by the waters of the Flood was made by Steve Austin of the Institute for Creation Research.  Here is the response to his claim.

Assumptions and Hypocrisy

The STORY: “Evolutionists look at all this evidence and based on their assumptions of millions of years still believe all these incredible formations took a long periods of time to happen.”

BUT, Creationists believe that all this evidence points better to the flood of the Bible. (7:36-7:52)

Evolutionists don’t want to accept Creation Scientists’ conclusions because of their belief in millions of years. (15:35-15:42)

The FACTS: This is pure hypocrisy. Creationists look at all this evidence and based on their assumptions of a literal interpretation of Genesis believe all these incredible formations formed very quickly.

Consider this statement from the Institute for Creation Research website found in their What We Believe section:

All things in the universe were created and made by God in the six literal days of the Creation Week described in Genesis 1:12:3, and confirmed in Exodus 20:8-11. The creation record is factual, historical, and perspicuous; thus all theories of origins or development that involve evolution in any form are false. (emphasis added)

In other words: The verdict of has already been handed out even before the trial.

Here is a response to the claim that scientists’ conclusions are based on their assumptions.

Ice Age

Conditions for Ice Age

The STORY: Creation scientists tried to model the atmospheric conditions after the Flood and hypercanes were only part of their model. They believe that the Flood was such a huge event that it would have affected the atmospheric conditions of the world for hundreds of years afterwards.

Creation scientists believe that there was an Ice Age after the Flood.  Two conditions are necessary for an Ice Age: warmer oceans and cooler continents.

(1)Warmer oceans: Oceans were probably warmer due to volcanic and tectonic activity. Data from seafloor cores seem to conclude that this was true at the close of the flood.

(2) Cooler continents: If there were lots of volcanic activity during the Flood, there would have been lots of aerosols (volcanic dust). Aerosols reflect solar heat back into space, causing the continents to become much cooler.

Volcanic rock have been found in layers Creation Scientists believe were laid down during the flood.

Warmer oceans would mean lots of evaporation.  This would mean lots of water vapour in the atmosphere. The wind currents carry this moisture to the poles.  Because of cooler continents, that water vapour would condense and fall as snow and ice.

This has all been confirmed by a computer model, the Community Climate Model developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which helps scientists model earth’s atmospheric patterns.  Similar to the hypercane model, Creation Scientists changed the oceans temp to 86F and let the model run.  They found that this would cause a lot of rain and snow at the edges of the continents and at the polar regions.  Creation Scientists believe there was formation of large ice sheets in Greenland, Antarctica and North America, which lasted several hundred years.

Miles, the atmospheric scientist says that Dr Park’s explanation sounds a lot better than the evolutionary one that he was taught and it makes sense.  (9:12-12:00)

The FACTS: Hypercanes were mentioned in Ep. 27.  They are a hypothetical class of tropical cyclones.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research maintains the Community Climate System Model. I was unable to find any information on Creation Scientists using this model and running their own program on it.  In any case, there is no evidence that the oceans were 86F during the time of the Flood.

The response to the claim that the Flood caused an Ice Age is here.

How Ice Ages Work

Ice Cores

The STORY: Evolutionists believe that the latest ice age began 2mya (said in a laughing tone)

Ice Cores

Ice Cores

and ended about 11000 years ago.  There have been multiple ice ages over history each happening about 20-30my or so.  But there are problems with this because of ice cores. The geological formation from older supposed ice ages are not at all like the ones from the more recent one.  If the older ice ages were similar, they would have left similar formations.  However, the older layers supposedly left behind certain rock layering and boulder deposits, which are better explained by catastrophic forces of water deposits (Noah’s Flood!). This last ice age was different – it showed evidence of storms and glacial movement.

Creation Scientists believe that they have a model that better fits the facts. Instead of many ice ages, the facts fit very well for a worldwide flood that then resulted in one ice age.  In ice cores dug up from Greenland and Antarctica, there is distinct layering towards the top.  Most scientists agree that they represent annual snowfalls.  Lower down, the layers become less distinct.  Evolutionists continue counting and come up with millions of years.  Creationists believe they represent multiple, quick snow deposits.  Hypercanes and snowstorms would have dumped many layers of snow over several hundred years after the Flood. When we look at the evidence this way, it fits much better with the Creationists’ theory! (14:10-17:00)

The FACTS: The response to this claim is found here.

The STORY: The Bible clearly talks about the Flood, but it doesn’t specifically mention an ice age. So, Creation Scientists rely on the physical evidence for an ice age. Dr Park says that it is interesting to note that the book of Job has more references to ‘snow’ and ‘ice’ than any other book in the Bible.  Angela mentions that Job was a descendant of Shem, who was Noah’s son. Many Bible scholars believe that Job lived sometime between the Tower of Babel and the time of Abraham

Job 38:22-23, 29-30, 37:9-10 are read.

The FACTS: The claim for an Ice Age shortly after the Flood and the issue of Job was already made and responded to in Ep. 4: Adventure on the Aucilla River, Part 2.

I cannot find any reference which says that Job was a descendant of Shem.  In any case, the descendants of Shem – the Shemites – lived on the Arabian Peninsula (according to the Table of Nations of Genesis 10).  There is no snow or ice on the Arabian Peninsula.  So, if Job were a descendant of Shem, would he know what God was talking about when the words ‘snow’ and ‘ice’ were mentioned?

Creation Response Team

The STORY: The children are so impressed with the Hurricane Response Team that they feel that they should come up with their own Response Team for Creationism.

Ryan: Hey, let’s make our own Creation Response Team!

Jessie: We can be the first on the scene when an evolutionary disaster is about to hit.

Jonathan: Creation and Formation to the rescue!

The adults all think this is a great idea.

The FACTS: What in the world is an ‘evolutionary disaster’??  This is an example of prejudice.

This Creation Response Team is not merely a fictional concept found in the audio adventure series.  On the Jonathan Park website, one can become a real life member of their Creation Response Team!   Your membership fee will help the spread the message of Creation and fight evolutionism.  For $10,000 (the highest level), you can even have the opportunity to perform in an upcoming Jonathan Park episode.  But you won’t be credited.

The misinformation on the height of Ayers Rock alone is enough to put me off.  But the problems with the whole Jonathan Park series are much more serious.

This episode was nothing more than young-earth Creation propaganda and hypocrisy.  Some of the information was mentioned in earlier episodes, so it’s just more propaganda through repetition.  If you want affirmation that the account in Genesis is accurate and historical and that any scientific theories that involve evolution or long time periods is wrong, then this is it.  If you are interested in learning more, the real facts are a click away.  Do yourself a favour – give this whole series a miss and go do some real learning.  Even the adventure story is not worth it.
