Dear YEC Friend – #3 Omphalos Hypothesis
You seem to accept that the world seems to appear older than 10,000 years old, but yet you cannot accept that it really is. You asked whether it is possible that God created the world to look old; your words were, “Maybe God created the appearance of evolution.”
My question would be: WHY would God do that?? What possible reason could there be for God to do something like that?
To be fair, you bring up an interesting idea. This idea that God created the world looking old and with the appearance of evolution is known as the Omphalos hypothesis. I know that some Creationists hold this view. But, it also has its opponents, as one would expect.
Why would God make things look like they evolved if they did not? Does this not make God a deceiver? Romans 1:20 says
20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
If things appear older than what they are, then we cannot understand God from what has been made. We cannot be certain that what we observe is trustworthy.
This Bible verse speaks of understanding God from that has been made, ie His Creation. So, I believe YECs would do well to study the world, ie God’s Creation, and learn about God that way. Many times, however, I do not see this at all. YECs look to the Bible and try to fit their observations into a literal reading of the Bible. This is not looking to creation!
That’s pretty much all I have to say about the Omphalos Hypothesis.
Blessings to you.
