Plot Summary:

Myles Morgan has consistently foiled the efforts of the Creation Response Team. Now is their chance to turn the tables as they track the Beowulf manuscript to the Sandia Mountains. But the situation becomes critical when the towering Sandia tram breaks down, leaving Angela, Martha, and Ryan dangling above the mountains, and Angela goes into premature labor. Their only hope for rescue lies in the hands of Jonathan, Jessie, and three old adversaries — Simon, Marvin, and Vinnie! Will they descend the peak victorious?

Background Information

The Jonathan Park CDs are produced by Vision Forum Ministries.  Through these CDs, VF hope to ‘provide children and adults with scientific evidence that is in harmony with the Word of God’.  [Which raises the questions, ‘What does “in harmony” mean?’ and ‘What do they do with scientific evidence that is not in harmony with the Word of God?’]

Tagline: This is our Father’s world, God created it; we can explore it, so live the adventure!

NOTE: The producers of this series neglect to reference their information in any form.  No references is ever given either on the CD or in the Study Guide for ANY information presented in the series.  Even the voice actors of the series are not given any credit anywhere.  We only know that the series is a production of Vision Forum Ministries.

This episode sees the Creation Response Team help the FBI (!!) to track down Myles Morgan. The three baddies – Simon, Marvin and Vinnie –  drive Angela and Martha to the hospital where they have their babies, Joseph Caleb and Summer Melody respectively.  Myles Morgan manages to get away but the Beowulf manuscript is returned to the British Museum.  It is the end of Volume 4.

The Story: Martha explains to Ryan that God designed the skunk to shoot out horrible-smelling chemicals as a defence. The information is in the Study Guide. The characters make a special point to mention that God designed the skunk and all its features.

Questions for the YEC:

(1) Did the skunk have this defence mechanism from the Beginning?  If yes, why would the skunk need this defence mechanism in the Garden of Eden where everything was perfect? If not, how long did it take for the skunk to develop this?

(2) Skunks are carnivores.  Again, when did they become carnivorous?

(3) Are skunks clean or unclean animals?  How many were on the Ark?

(4) When did they migrate to where they are now?

Beowulf and Genesis

The Story: The Beowulf manuscript is now back at its rightful place in the British Museum. Dr Park speaks to the crowd gathered in the British Library and tells them that the manuscript is important to the Team because it is one of many stories and legends that tell of man’s encounter with dragons. These legends support the Biblical account of Genesis.

The Facts: Just because similar legends appear in several places around the world does not mean that they really happened.  Many cultures have stories of talking animals, giants, genies, fairies, monsters and the like.  Why don’t Creationists take these stories into account?

Modern man appeared 200,000 BCE and dinosaurs died out 65 mya.  Man and dinosaurs never roamed the earth together.

Creation Response Team

The Story: Jim Brenan addresses the crowd and explains why the need for a Creation Response Team.  He quotes Romans 1:20.  The goal of the CRT is to show from the things that are made God’s glory and majesty.  Dr Park says that when they were in the Sandia Mountains, they were surrounded by God’s glory.  There were many climates and biomes, each one displaying an incredible balance and in each of those habitats are animals perfectly designed to live and flourish. The CRT’s goal is to show that there is NO WAY that random, accidental processes of evolution could be responsible for our world. Instead, it all gives wonderful glory to our Creator. (22:55-23:55)

The Facts:Romans 1:20 says that we can understand God from the things that are made.  And from studying the things that are made, we learn that the world is very old and that living things have evolved.  The characters have quoted Romans 1:20 before (episodes 15 and 16), not realising that it does the opposite of what they are trying to claim!  The verse says nothing about Genesis.

The issue of different biomes and how different plants and animals live together was already addressed in the previous episode. These animals must have gone through rapid changes (ie evolution) since Creation.  They did not have the features they have now because the conditions in Eden would have been different. Furthermore, they would have had to adapt, ie evolve, to develop their various mechanisms of attack and defence since such mechanisms would not have been necessary in Eden.

Once AGAIN(!!) the idea that evolution is ‘random, accidental processes’ and how impossible it is, is mentioned.  Since the scriptwriter (Pat Roy) forgot to have a member of the British Museum correct this misconception, it is up to the listener to mentally make the correction.

Also, Dr Park is arguing from incredulity.  Just because something seems ‘incredible’ doesn’t mean that it is impossible.  This is exercising poor logic and it is very disappointing to see a PhD holder make such careless statements.  Over and over again.

There was very little science content in here except perhaps the bit about the skunk. The program focused heavily on the capture of the Beowulf manuscript and the tram adventure.  The whole thing was very over-the-top and hard to believe.  It is not very likely that the FBI would work together with the Creation Response Team (instead of just taking over completely) and letting young children in on the action to boot!  Jonathan and Jessie manage to fix the tram that came off its track!

The writer of the series has not done his homework properly. The factual information is usually correct, but raises questions/problems when placed under a strict YEC framwork.  This point seems to be lost on the producers of this program.  They also present misconceptions of evolution, show how ‘impossible’ (not to mention ungodly) it is and conclude that Creation must therefore be right. Oh, and they ‘support’ their views with a Bible verse or two – sometimes oblivious to the fact that the verse does not say what they say it does!

This is the end of Volume 4.

  1. That argument about dragons has always frustrated me, because basically those who use it are saying, “Everything about (fill in culture here)’s mythology is false–except the bit about dragons battling with humans. That must be true because it’s what WE believe.”

  2. Wow – a comment within minutes of my posting! Here I was trying to get a post done before midnight; I clicked on Post before it was 100% right just so I could get it in.

Yeah, the argument about dragons is frustrating. A lot of arguments are frustrating, actually. It is as you say – it all boils down to whether ‘we’ believe it or not. If it agrees with what ‘we’ believe, it must be true. Otherwise, it’s not.

Thanks for reading and commenting, cjmr! It means a lot to me.

  3. I have your blog on my FB newsfeed, so I don’t miss one. 🙂 And I’m at GMT-4, so I think your midnight is actually right at my normal internet time.

  4. Except now we’ve just finished Daylight Saving! 😀

Go ahead. Tell me your thoughts.
