The Grubgulp Letters – #3

My Dear Toadwaft,

I see that your Charge has received her homeschool books.  It warmed my heart to read that she was disturbed by the mention of ‘millions of years’ in the science books!  Work on this feeling of unrest.  It will reap rewards later.

It matters not a bit that these pages that mention the offensive material are not scheduled to be read. It does not even matter that she has no intention of reading them – or, reading them with ‘editing’ – even if they were scheduled. The mere fact that the pages are there – in her home – is enough.  She will constantly worry that her precious children will get their hands on the books and read those pages on their own and she is not there to correct them.  If you can get her to tear out those pages, or black-out the offensive phrases with a self-righteous attitude, then so much the better!  ‘I’m doing it for my children’s own good,’ is the feeling you will be trying to go for.

Better still if you can get her to wonder if perhaps she has purchased the right curriculum!  Obviously she can’t be there to monitor everything.  If only she could be sure that her home were free of corrupting influences.  Does the curriculum supplier come with a ‘guarantee’?  Can she return the books?  These are the thoughts you must try to inject into your Charge.

Looking forward to your next report,

The above letter is a work of fiction. Any similarities to The Screwtape Letters may be intentional.  My apologies to C.S. Lewis.  For more letters, click on the Grubgulp Letters category.
