Background Information

The Jonathan Park CDs are produced by Vision Forum Ministries. Through these CDs, VF hope to ‘provide children and adults with scientific evidence that is in harmony with the Word of God’. [Which raises the questions, ‘What does “in harmony” mean?’ and ‘What do they do with scientific evidence that is not in harmony with the Word of God?’]

Tagline: This is our Father’s world, God created it; we can explore it, so live the adventure!

NOTE: The producers of this series neglect to reference their information in any form.  No references is ever given either on the CD or in the Study Guide for ANY information presented in the series.  Even the voice actors of the series are not given any credit anywhere.  We only know that the series is a production of Vision Forum Ministries.

Review

The Origin of Life

The Story: The Creation Response Team have to come up with an idea for the next episode of the Battle of the Worldviews TV show.  Jonathan suggests tackling the issue of the origin of life.  The other members respond enthusiastically.

The Facts: At this point of the program (about one-and-a-half minutes in), the listener would do well to turn the CD off and write this episode off as yet another dud.  When debating evolution, one should not bring up the issue of the origin of life because evolution is not concerned about the origin of life, but, rather,  how life has changed/evolved after it appeared.  Jonathan and gang are barking up the wrong tree – again.]

The Law of Biogenesis

The Story: Dr Park explains the Law of Biogenesis which states that life can only come from life.  However, this has not stopped evolutionists from trying to come up with theories of how life could arise from non-organic matter.  This goes against the Law.

The Study Guide mentions several scientists and their experiments: Francesco Redi (mispelled as Fransisco in the Study Guide), Jan Baptist van Helmont and Louis Pasteur.

The Facts: The Law of Biogenesis is attributed to Louis Pasteur.  Pasteur and other scientists were actually trying to disprove the idea that creatures could spontaneously appear fully-formed; in other words they were disproving creationism!

Scientific Theory vs Scientific Law

The Story: The Study Guide explains:

A scientific law starts as a theory and then becomes a law. They are, simply put, theories that have never been broken.

The Facts: This is a common misconception.

According to wikipedia:

A common misconception is that scientific theories are rudimentary ideas that will eventually graduate into scientific laws when enough data and evidence has been accumulated. A theory does not change into a scientific law with the accumulation of new or better evidence. A theory will always remain a theory, a law will always remain a law.

It is very disappointing to see Vision Forum propagate this misconception and masquerade it as fact.

According the the National Academy of Science:

Is evolution a fact or a theory?

The theory of evolution explains how life on earth has changed. In scientific terms, “theory” does not mean “guess” or “hunch” as it does in everyday usage. Scientific theories are explanations of natural phenomena built up logically from testable observations and hypotheses. Biological evolution is the best scientific explanation we have for the enormous range of observations about the living world.

Scientists most often use the word “fact” to describe an observation. But scientists can also use fact to mean something that has been tested or observed so many times that there is no longer a compelling reason to keep testing or looking for examples. The occurrence of evolution in this sense is a fact. Scientists no longer question whether descent with modification occurred because the evidence supporting the idea is so strong.

Why isn’t evolution called a law?

Laws are generalizations that describe phenomena, whereas theories explain phenomena. For example, the laws of thermodynamics describe what will happen under certain circumstances; thermodynamics theories explain why these events occur.

Laws, like facts and theories, can change with better data. But theories do not develop into laws with the accumulation of evidence. Rather, theories are the goal of science. [emphasis added]

Page 5 of the Study Guide starts off with the words ‘Because evolutionists say that chance has made life, the first life HAD to come about simply from chemicals.’

First of all, the word evolutionist appears over and over again in the series.  It is a word that is not used mainstream scientists.  The Jonathan Park characters, however, use it with wanton abandon as a ‘catch-all’ for anti-God.

Secondly, ‘evolutionists’ do NOT say that chance made life.

The rest of the episode featured Black Smokers and how scientists (called evolutionists by Dr Park and the other Creationists) have tried to create life in the laboratory.  The historical information presented is true.

Conclusion

The adventure story was okay – a bit over-dramatic and/or ‘convenient’ at times – but passable for a radio show.

The factual information found in this episode is readily available on the internet (for free!)  to anyone who is interested.

The anti-evolution indoctrination is unsettling.  That the writer of this series (Pat Roy) seems not to have done his homework properly about what evolution is/isn’t, but merely repeat anti-evolution propaganda is unbecoming, unethical and unprofessional. That many people have listened to these shows and swallow everything presented as truth is disappointing, to put it mildly.

Not worth the time or the money.
