    It’s one thing to have a product aesthetically targeted generally for a particular demographic. It’s another thing to build a marketing campaign so directly around that demographic that you come off looking like a sexist asshole.

    I don’t know to what extent the data backs this up, but it used to be “common knowledge” that African American people were the majority consumers of menthol-flavored cigarettes. So if the data backed that up then maybe a manufacturer would emphasize their ad buys in specific geographies, or tailor their marketing campaign . . . that’s marketing.

    What would then cross the line into racist douchery would be packaging that said “Menthol . . . FOR BLACK FOLK!”
