Evolution

Key points:

Evolution does not claim to explain the development of the universe or how life first begun – it explains how new varieties of life forms emerge from earlier life forms.

A Scientific Theory refers specifically to a well-substantiated explanation which accounts for a body of well-substantiated facts.

People who make statements such as ‘Evolution is just a theory, not a fact’ are not using the terms correctly.

In science, theories don’t get ‘promoted’ to facts, facts are explained by theories.  Theories are the ultimate goal and the ultimate achievement in the sciences of nature.

  1. Favorite YouTube comment to this (referring to the current # of “dislikes”):

    “17 people believe in crocoducks”

    haha.

Some of the comments though are too accommodationist for my taste, however. I see a few that talk about how “evolution and religion are/can be compatible” . . . if by “compatible” you mean evolution doesn’t need religion, at all, then, uh, ok.

In any event, a pretty well done video that addresses many of the common (uninformed) “critiques” of evolution that you see *way* too often here in the US. It’s no wonder our student scores in science suck.
