For more Jonathan Park reviews, click here.

Plot Summary:

The Manta heads back to sea, this time to explore an old shipwreck site. Join the Creation Response Team as they investigate the hidden mysteries of the deep and test new undersea technology. But the real secret seems to lie deep in the heart of Alexander DeMarcus. (Taken from here.)

There is NO Study Guide for Volume 7.  You’re on your own.

Background Information

The Jonathan Park CDs are produced by Vision Forum Ministries.  Through these CDs, VF hope to ‘provide children and adults with scientific evidence that is in harmony with the Word of God’.  [Which raises the questions, ‘What does “in harmony” mean?’ and ‘What do they do with scientific evidence that is not in harmony with the Word of God?’]

Tagline: This is our Father’s world, God created it; we can explore it, so live the adventure!

NOTE: The producers of this series neglect to reference their information in any form.  No references is ever given either on the CD or in the Study Guide for ANY information presented in the series.  Even the voice actors of the series are not given any credit anywhere.  We only know that the series is a production of Vision Forum Ministries.

Diving Limits

The Story: Alexander DeMarcus takes the Creation Response Team (excluding the babies, thankfully) aboard The Manta on an underwater ‘adventure’.  He tells them he is searching for a shipwreck located about 100m below the surface of the sea. Angela shows off her metric conversion acumen and says that that is equivalent to about 328ft.  (Yes, I’m annoyed that everything in this show has to be presented in Imperial!) Then, oh then, she scolds her host in her patronising signature baby voice, ‘Alexander! That would be a challenge for even a professional diver. Recreational divers only go about  130ft at most.’

‘”All great and honourable actions are accompanied with great difficulties and must be both enterprised and overcome with answerable courages.” That was written by William Bradford during the Pilgrims’ time of Thanksgiving for God’s provision while in a strange, new world,’ answers DeMarkus. He then goes on to reassure his guests that he has Special Diving Suits for just this occasion. (3:25-4:07)

The Facts: The recommended technical diving limit is 100m.

The limit for recreational divers is 130ft [40m] as Angela says.

William Bradford did say those words.

Comb Jellies

Comb Jelly

The Story: The characters come across a sea creature that DeMarcus identifies as a Northern Comb Jelly which is a whole different classification from a jellyfish. The children ooh and ahh with Jessie squealing with delight as she describes the animal.

Dr Park, the paleontologist who must always add his two cents, smugly says, ‘As we do the publicity on this, we can point out the bioluminescence, the ability to produce its own light. This happens as a result of some amazing chemical reactions and fascinating structures called photonic crystals, made up of tiny hairs called silia.’ (4:07-5:02)

The Facts: You can read more about Comb Jellies here.

Comb Jellies are ctenophora and jellyfish are cnidarians, so DeMarcus is right when he says that comb jellies are a different classification.

You can read more about bioluminescence here.

Here’s a video of a comb jelly on YouTube:

Dominionism

The Story: Captain DeMarcus says, ‘I believe as we collect and study these magnificent creatures we are exercising dominion of God’s glory on earth.’

Jonathan quotes Genesis 1:26, 2:15  and Psalm 8:6 as evidence.

Dr Park explains, ‘We’re here to be good stewards of the earth and we have responsibility over the plants, animals and other resources. The LORD is well pleased when we explore His Creation to learn more about Him.’

(5:02-6:07)

Playing music is considered to be part of the Dominion mandate, as well as our ability to communicate, to reason and to be creative, and to have fellowship with the Creator.

(7:30-7:45)

The Facts: Dr Park is a liar  not being entirely truthful.  Dominionism isn’t only about ‘being good stewards’.  Dominionism, as espoused by Vision Forum, is about having rule/control over all aspects of life and bringing it all under God.

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

Man and Animals

The Story: The Bible tells us that Man is distinct from the animals; we are made in God’s image.  When we look around, we see it as true. Sadly, evolutionary theory says exactly the opposite.

Charles Darwin once wrote in his book The Descent of Man that there is no fundamental difference between man and the higher animals in their mental faculties.

Jim: Evolutionists believe that man has simply evolved from the animals, and therefore is still an animal.

Martha: And that has led to a devaluing of human life.

Dr Park (the fountain of information): That’s so true.  There is a quote etched into my mind. Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA once said, “There is no rational basis for saying that a human being has special rights. A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.”…Michael Fox, the vice-president of The Humane Society said, “The life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration.”

Jessie: I guess when they reject the truth that God created, these are the sad and logical conclusions of their thinking.

Dr Park (smugly): The rest of the world is starting to believe it. And that’s why Christians need to know what they believe, and the consequences of rejecting biblical truth.

(7:25-9:26)

The Facts:

The Theory of Evolution does not say that humans come from animals, but rather, that all creatures share a common ancestor.  There is strong evidence to support this view.

Taxonomically, humans are classified in the Animal Kingdom and hence are animals in that sense.

Charles Darwin’s quote is found in Chapter 3 of his book The Descent of Man which can be read here.

Why Humans are More Intelligent Than Animals.

Ingrid Newkirk’s quote when seen in context is as follows:

Animal liberationists do not separate out the human animal, so there is no rational basis for saying that a human being has special rights. A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. They’re all mammals.

Michael W. Fox’s views quite possibly could be considered radical, controversial and extreme, even by his ‘team’.

The term evolutionist is typically only used by Creationists.  It is disappointing to see it used over and over again in this series.

Evidence and Scripture

The Story: Dr Park says, ‘As you know, our faith is rooted in the Scriptures. We start with God’s Word as absolute truth and then when we investigate the world around us, we see that the evidence when interpreted correctly, is in harmony. But there will always be things we can’t explain fully.’

Jonathan says he understands that we are saved through faith but then asks, ‘If it is true, shouldn’t all the evidence line up?’

Dr Park says, ‘Yes, and it does! The problem is we are flawed humans. We don’t know everything or know how to interpret the evidence correctly. This is why we must submit ourselves to God and His ways. Even when we do not fully understand.’

(18:08-19:08)

The Facts: Do not be deceived.  It all sounds good on the surface.

One of the tenets of young-Earth Creationism is this:

The creation record is factual, historical, and perspicuous; thus all theories of origins or development that involve evolution in any form are false. (emphasis added)

In other words, Dr Park is saying that the evidence doesn’t seem to match what the Bible says because we don’t know how to interpret the evidence.  When the evidence is interpreted correctly, it will match what the Bible says. If it doesn’t match, then we’ve interpreted it incorrectly.

Questions:

* How did Christians cope before the Bible – as we know it today – was compiled? Were the early Christians at a disadvantage having only bits and pieces?

* What do you make of Jesus’ words when He said that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth  (John 16:13)?

* Is it possible that the idea that ‘the creation record is factual, historical, and perspicuous’ is a product of sinful man’s flawed interpretation?

Conclusion

This story seemed more than a little outrageous.  The Creation Response Team seem to be able to get a lot of ‘breaks’ with regards to being allowed to go on explorations with professionals.  Even children get to be in on the adventure!

It appears that Vision Forum is trying to promote more of its ideals and philosophy as the series progresses, especially with regards to what they call ‘The Dominion Mandate’.

  1. I believe Evolutionists look at the facts of life through their own worldview. No one looks unbiased at the facts. Each person looks at the facts through their own lens. Thankfully, Christians have the Bible as their lens.

  2. I was commenting on the comic you posted. But yes, I believe each person looks at the world and facts through a lens, glasses, or simply put, their worldview. Their presuppositions. Everybody has them. The comic made it look like Evolutionists look at the facts in an unbiased way, when everyone interprets facts according to their presuppositions. That’s all I’m saying. I appreciate your detailed review of this series although I disagree with your rejection of Christianity. I must agree that I find the moms in this series a bit whiny. I feel sad when time after time, the CRT questions Alexander Demarcus about his work and he must ask again and again for their patience.

  3. After reading further your blog, I see you are a Christian. What do you mean when you said, as one of the facts, do not be deceived, it all sounds good on the surface?

  4. Thank you for coming back to answer my question. Thank you for agreeing that the moms in the series sound whiny.

    Yes, I am a Christian. I reject young-Earth Creationism.

After my comment about not being deceived, etc, I elaborated.

Dr Park claims that all the evidence lines up with the Bible. IF it does not line up, it is because we are not interpreting the evidence correctly. We know when the interpretation is correct when it lines up with the Bible.

    Questions:

    * How did Christians cope before the Bible – as we know it today – was compiled? Were the early Christians at a disadvantage having only bits and pieces?

    * What do you make of Jesus’ words when He said that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth (John 16:13)?
