The Truthiness of Things

Going through my old blogposts and this one caught my eye.

A Yewnique Life

Have you ever had anyone say to you, ‘I know what the “evidence” says, but I just can’t accept it because my gut tells me otherwise.’?  I have.  A friend told me that that he knows that humans did not evolve because his gut tells him so and for him, that is enough.  No matter what the evidence says, he has to go with his gut.

This is an example of truthiness.

Truthiness defined:

Truthiness is a “truth” that a person claims to know intuitively “from the gut” in that it “feels right” without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.

Young-Earth Creationism falls into this category.  Despite all the claims that Creationists make, the bottom line is, YECism is more based on truthiness than on truth.

I could go on, but I won’t.

  1. Hulk Grammar Nazi say, “DOUBLE QUOTES OUTSIDE! SINGLE QUOTES INSIDE!”

  2. If one is following UK punctuation rules, then it is ‘…’ for primary quotes and “…” for secondary quotes and so on and so forth.

I suspect you already know this. 😛

Also, I noticed in one of your comments (in another post) you put the full-stop (period) outside the quoted word, which is a VERY un-American thing to do, but which was very pleasing to my eye.

  3. I try to be consistent within a post with the quotes thing, but I know I haven’t been consistent across different posts.

I tell my children, “As long as you’re consistent within one piece of writing, I don’t really care.” (There, double quotes just for you!)

That full stop after the word “otherwise” is redundant, isn’t it? I’ve gone back and fixed it on the original post, but it still shows up here.
